It's paced so meticulously well that even though well-seasoned horror fans know something's going to pop out at you, it's still a great time when it happens.

Insidious: Out of the Further delivers a popcorn-rattling ride full of fun, creative scares and serviceable (if familiar) human stakes that more than justify tiptoeing through the tulips back to the spirit world.

Familiarity, in fact, is what makes the Insidious saga special, as it continues to involve screen legend Lin Shaye, who brings both heart and intensity to the spooky goings-on of Insidious: Out of the Further – at eighty-plus-years-old, she’s the franchise’s superhero.

In a year of horror directors making their mark, it's also not the most exciting story to see one conform so dutifully to the franchise’s long-decided temperament. But Out of the Further scrapes by on its inherent eccentricities and small moments of clear ability.

With Insidious: Out of the Further, its sixth entry, the Insidious series is still going through the motions in most ways, but it’s fun to see that there are still tricks up its clammy, spume-flecked sleeve.
