Can one car on its own represent a revolution?
If we’re talking F1 and Ferrari, then the answer can only be yes.
And the car is the Ferrari 312B.
1970 was the year Mauro Forghieri, Ferrari’s chief engineer and designer, decided to launch a new car on the track supported by a powerful revolutionary engine, the legendary horizontally-opposed V12 model of the Ferrari 312B: the first “flat” engine in racing history, originally designed for an American aeronautical factory “to be mounted in the wing of an aeroplane”. This is how the Ferrari 312B was born, making its debut in 1970 and allowing top racing drivers, Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni, to win four Grand Prix and compete for the world title right to the very end. Above all it was the revolution sparked off by this car, one of the most visually stunning, powerful vehicles ever built at the Maranello factory, that would cause an extraordinary succession of wins for Ferrari, lasting at least a decade (1970-1980) with 37 Grand Prix wins, 4 world Constructors Championships and 3 Drivers Championships.
Almost fifty years on FERRARI 312B, directed by Andrea Marini, will be released as a special event in 50 countries worldwide, and will premiere in Italy on 9th, 10th, 11th October exclusively (list of cinemas available soon on www.nexodigital.it). It brings to the big screen a story of men and motors, but most of all, a story about passion. It was passion that encouraged Italian, ex F1 driver Paolo Barilla, to bring the Ferrari 312B back on the track, 46 years after its debut and race it once more on the Montecarlo circuit, by taking part in the Historic Rally for classic cars held there every two years. In order to do this, Barilla entrusted the car to the man who created it in 1970, designer and engineer Mauro Forghieri, and his enthusiastic team of mechanics. The car was completely restored, piece by piece, in preparation for the big comeback.
FERRARI 312B is a journey to experience the indomitable spirit of F1, through the long days and sleepless nights spent searching for improvement, results, steps forward: retracing the years of its Golden Age through accounts given by racing drivers who were capable of truly unforgettable feats: Niki Lauda, Jacky Ickx, Jackie Stewart, Gerhard Berger, Damon Hill. These are the main characters who lend their voices to the story and, at the same time, bear witness to an entire era, when gentlemanly challenge, competition, aggressive performance and ambition were the result of a passion for racing that knew no bounds. This is the very same passion demonstrated by Forghieri and his team of mechanics in getting the FERRARI 312B back on track and into shape, so they too, just like top racing drivers, become worthy representatives of the same vision of racing and of life as the Drake himself, Enzo Ferrari.
Director Andrea Marini’s love for the story provides all the other ingredients, mixing speed, risk, beauty and sound into the film, to make it a unique, emotional experience: and so in FERRARI 312B we live the lives of the mechanics, the designers and the racing drivers, sharing in their excitement and enthusiasm, despondency and hope. Everything, win or lose, until the next time. FERRARI 312B, based on an idea by Paolo Tarpini, is a tribute to a car that is both a work of art, made entirely by hand, and a prototype launched by its inventors full speed into the future. It is the symbol of a revolution that changed the world of F1 forever.
FERRARI 312B is produced by Tarpini Production and distributed to cinemas by Nexo Digital.
